Help build the computational brain for autonomous, robots-driven materials discovery.

You will join our interdisciplinary team on an ambitious project to develop an autonomous approach to materials discovery. The project, ADAM – Autonomous Discovery of Advanced Materials – is funded by a prestigious Synergy Grant from the European Research Council. The project brings together state-of-the-art predictive computational chemistry methods, robotics, machine learning and materials characterisation through a collaboration between research groups at the universities of Southampton, Liverpool and Rostock.

The research group is led by Professor Graeme Day (www.crystalstructureprediction.net) in the School of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. An important aspect of your role will be to assist in the smooth running of the project and coordination of the research team. You will also contribute to the application of computational methods for materials discovery. This research will advance the project vision of computationally led materials discovery with initial applications in the areas of porous materials and photocatalysts.

To be successful you will have a background in chemistry, materials science of physics along with experience in computational chemistry and the use of computer simulations.  You will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience of working in an interdisciplinary research group along with a desire to work with team members to achieve the project goals.

You will have a PhD* in Chemistry or related discipline (eg. physics, materials science), or equivalent professional qualifications and experience.

This role is full time, fixed term until 31/08/2026.
