About the position

This position is a fixed term, full time (100 %) position for 3 years  and it's available from June 1st, 2021.

At the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging (www.ntnu.no/isb), there is a PhD position available within the field of computational multi-omics with focus on molecular imaging using spatial transcriptomics and MALDI-imaging on prostate cancer tissue. The PhD candidate will work within the research group of Associate Professor May-Britt Tessem https://www.ntnu.edu/web/isb/prostomics#/view/about and within the multidisciplinary research environment of the MR Cancer group (www.ntnu.edu/isb/mr-cancer).

The PhD work is a collaboration between ISB and Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM). The candidate will be affiliated with both departments in everyday work. Duties of the position

The candidate will be working on a project directed towards improving the diagnosis of prostate cancer, which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer type among men in Norway. The main goal of the PhD candidate is to develop computational tools to combine various multi-omics molecular imaging data where the main goal is to define aggressive prostate cancer from more slow-growing indolent types. Knowledge within bioinformatics, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods will be essential for this position. The candidate will also be collaborating with Dr Nathalie Jurisch-Yaksi’s laboratory (https://www.ntnu.edu/employees/nathalie.jurisch-yaksi) located in the same campus to use the developed computational tools in the context of brain physiology.

Required selection criteria

Qualification requirements

  • A master’s degree or equivalent education within the field of bioinformatics, biostatistics or equivalent, with a weighted-average grade of B or higher, in accordance with NTNU’s grading system
  • Documented skills with programming in i.e. Python, Matlab or R
  • Excellent English skills, spoken and written

Emphasis will also be placed on

  • Documented experience with image processing/analysis
  • Experience with Linux environments/cloud-based computing
  • Experience in other programming languages such as Java and C/C++
  • Experience in using machine learning, data science and image analysis libraries such as: NumPy/SciPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, Pandas, Matplotlib, OpenCV or similar
  • Experience within molecular biology, analytical chemistry and especially methods such as Mass spectrometry Imaging or RNA-seq (spatial transcriptomics)
  • Knowledge of and experience with histopathology and clinical samples

Salary and conditions

PhD Candidates (code 1017) are remunerated with a gross annual salary of minimum NOK 479 600. In addition to taxes, a further 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations and supplementary rules with guidelines for employment as PhD Candidate appointments at universities and university colleges in Norway. Admission to a doctoral degree programme is a requirement for employment as a PhD candidate.   • TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based test), 92 / writing 22 (internet- based test)

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grade A or B
