About the team

The WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) is one of 16 Commonwealth-funded University Departments of Rural Health (UDRH) in Australia, located in the Midwest and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.

WACRH’s mission is to collaborate in: (i) the promotion and preparation of students for health careers in a rural setting; (ii) innovative rural learning opportunities of students, health professionals and the community; and (iii) rigorous applied research and knowledge translation aimed at optimising the health and wellbeing of rural communities.

About the opportunity

This role at WACRH’s Geraldton office is an accredited training position of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM), funded by the Specialist Training Program through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Your placement can be developed to meet your learning needs, which can include research and evaluation, health promotion, Aboriginal health and creative learning opportunities working directly with communities and a range of stakeholders including health services.

You may have an opportunity to work collaboratively with the Geraldton Public Health Unit and there are opportunities to undertake work in more remote locations as part of the placement.

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake accredited public health medicine training, working in Geraldton, a large regional centre in Western Australia that enjoys excellent climate and cultural, educational and recreational facilities.

The Western Australian Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary academic centre working to improve the health of rural, remote and Indigenous people through a unique collaboration of all five Western Australian universities. It has a strong collaborative ethos and a population health focus with an interest in a research, knowledge exchange and policy.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • General Medical Registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Post graduate medical work experience
  • MPH degree (or equivalent) that satisfies the AFPHM compulsory core discipline areas and/or acceptance into the public health medicine training program by the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Royal Australian College of Physicians
  • Interest in public health, rural and Aboriginal health, infectious diseases, non-communicable disease control and epidemiology
  • Report writing skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of producing quality data
  • Interest in working to improve the health of vulnerable and marginalised populations, including through policy and social interventions
