Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Geographic Information Technology

About the position

The Department of Architecture and Planning (IAP) is one of four departments at the Faculty of Architecture and Design at NTNU. The department offers education at master’s level in Architecture, Physical Planning, Urban Ecological Planning, as well as Real Estate and Facilities Management. IAP also carries out academic research related to the study programmes as well as research on Smart Cities.

The position is part of a strategic initiative to strengthen the department’s capability towards the use of geographic information technology in planning, spatial and urban research. The position will be anchored in the IAP education programmes while strongly linked to the Smart Cities group. A key element for both will be the interface between urban research and geographical technology-based methods, founded on an insight that technological changes and digitalisation are becoming increasingly important to our academic fields.

You will report to the Head of the department.

Duties of the position

  • Managing of courses and development of learning methods that will ensure further advancement within the field, and strengthen the master's programme in physical planning
  • Tutoring and lecturing at all levels of the master's programme in physical planning, and at other programmes offered by the department when required
  • Research linked to spatial planning on urban and regional levels and application of geographical information technology, preferably focussing topics categorized under the emerging fields of Smart Cities and digitalisation
  • Combining teaching with relevant research
  • Tutoring of PhD candidates within GIS-oriented research (Geographical Information Systems)

Required selection criteria

The position of Associate Professor requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within urban planning or geographic information technology or a closely related subject area.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Master's Degree in urban planning, geography, civil engineering, or architectureInnovative capabilities in use of geographical information systems, towards analysis or method’s development
  • Practice in the use of GIS aimed at spatial planning and urban research, from public or private sector
  • Interdisciplinary research and publishing, in national and international arenas
  • Proficient in English, basic oral and written ability in a Scandinavian language
  • Good overview of the field and ability to conduct reflected, analytical and critical subject-matter discussions with students and colleagues

We offer 

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 526 000 to NOK 694 400 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.
