We are looking for an exceptional person to lead the Portsmouth Law School within the Faculty of Business and Law into the next stage of its growth and development.

About the role
The new Head will be a key member of the Faculty's Executive Team and will contribute to shaping, developing and implementing the Faculty's Strategy.

Responsible for managing department operations and providing effective leadership for both staff and students, the Head will shape staff development and well-being. This includes staff recruitment and development, as well as promoting excellence in scholarship and the advancement of early career colleagues.

The Head of the Law School will lead student recruitment, as well as developing the Law curriculum across the School's programmes to foster an innovative, transformative and enabling education for students.

On this basis, we seek someone who is a leading scholar in their field, who has a keen understanding across the domains of research and teaching, and who can demonstrate significant leadership experience including budget and resource management skills.

About the School
The School has now some 35 academic staff and nearly 1,000 students and has grown strongly over the last decade. The rule of law and access to justice are central to a functioning society. In the Portsmouth Law School we're passionate about the role that the legal system plays in upholding these principles.

Research continues to thrive within the Law School whose research is known for intellectual rigour and for the benefits it brings to society. There are ambitious growth plans over the next three years aimed at building on our critical mass of research active colleagues within the School.

Given the size of the school, the nature of legal education and our open and supportive ethos, research undertaken in the School is diverse.  Our historic strengths lie in Business Law and International Law, but as the School has grown this has been joined by newer areas, such as Legal Education and developing new ways of delivering legal education; Equality, Diversity and Human Rights; Property Law; and, Legaltech, Data and Digital Law.  The School works closely with major law firms and business partners providing advice and support.

About the Faculty of Business and Law
The Faculty currently has over 230 academic and teaching staff, and over 6,000 students, with plans and resource commitments to grow this further under the University’s 2030 Vision. The Faculty has a strong research focus linking both theory with real world practice; read more on our website: http://bit.ly/UoPBusinessandLaw

Our mission is to generate and deliver world-changing knowledge through real-world engagement and application across the globe. Our students develop the skills and qualifications to make a positive impact in the legal profession and society.

Our exceptional teaching balances practical learning, industry experience and academic rigour to produce graduates with the knowledge and expertise to succeed as legal professionals. They also gain practical experience through our Legal Advice Clinic and practice building their legal skills in our mock courtroom, a replica of a Crown Court, where they develop their mooting and advocacy experience.
