The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) is a world-leading research institute committed to developing knowledge-based solutions to meet the global sustainability challenges facing society. The work of SMI is transdisciplinary, independent, impartial and rigorous. Our research integrates the expertise of production, environmental, social science, and health and safety specialists to deliver sustainable resource development and train the next generation of industry and community leaders.

SMI is comprised of six research centres and a Centre of Excellence in Chile. In addition to the depth of expertise within each Centre, SMI has developed five ‘cross-cutting’ Strategic Research Programs to address these global challenges.

Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI)

The Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry supports the sustainable management of water in the minerals sector. The team contributes to solving the engineering, environmental and social challenges of water management and engages with a wide range of research organisations and stakeholders in Australia and internationally. The Centre’s research is funded principally by selected mining companies who are committed to sustainability performance.

About This Opportunity

Manage and support a range of research projects undertaken by the Centre for Water in the Minerals industry, as well as ensure delivery of research objectives. The role will also contribute to the development, implementation and promotion of the Centre’s research strategy, which aims at supporting and improving the environmental performance of the minerals industry.

The position will be responsible for integrating all environmental aspects into multi-disciplinary research projects across a wide range of research themes including:

  • Mine closure planning and collaborative approaches for defining post-mining outcomes
  • Regional water management
  • Mine water management
  • Rehabilitation practices
  • Assessment of environmental, social and governance complexities associated with the minerals industry in general

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

The Senior Research Fellow will manage and support a range of research projects undertaken by the Centre for Water in the Minerals industry, as well as ensure delivery of research objectives. The role will also contribute to the development, implementation and promotion of the Centre’s research strategy, which aims at supporting and improving the environmental performance of the minerals industry. The position will be responsible for integrating all environmental aspects into multi-disciplinary research projects, supervising, and participating in, a wide range of research themes.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time fixed term position, initially for 12 months at Academic Level C.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$121,939 - $140,603 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of AUD$142,669 - $164,506.
