About the Department of Chemical Engineering

We are a large Department with approximately 20 teaching and research staff, 30 full time research staff and around 90 PhD students.

Academic staff have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific society, the Australian Academy of Science, and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Industry Engagement is a key focus, and we carry out research projects based on deep collaborations with government and business and work with organisations that provide internship opportunities for our students.

About the role:

The Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Postdoctoral Fellowship has been endowed to the University to provide for the health and wellbeing of all residents of Australia. The donor is keen to provide a mechanism to retain outstanding Australian researchers in medical research, science and engineering within the country.

Candidates thus must be Australian citizens resident in Australia and without the need to leave Australia to augment their knowledge.

As the Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Postdoctoral Fellow, you will undertake high quality, independent and multidisciplinary research to complete the aims of your project. This will involve leading the preparation and publication of research outcomes in international conferences and leading journals as well as presenting your research to a variety of industry partners and/or stakeholders.

In this position, you may also undertake teaching and research supervision / mentoring directly related to your area of research as opportunities arise.

As a member of our broader Chemical and Biomedical Engineering team; as well as the Faculty of Engineering and IT we seek a community-minded individual who sees the value in:

  • liaising effectively with collaborators and a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • assisting other researchers in carrying out research activities in order to work as a team and further the department’s research output
  • attending and actively participate in departmental seminars, meetings and committees as required by your supervisor
  • undertaking and observing Occupational Health and Safety.

This Fellowship provides funding of $10,000 p.a. to support your project costs over the term of your fellowship. Applying for additional funding is encouraged.

About You:

Australian Citizenship is a pre-requisite to eligibility for this fellowship.

You will be capable of demonstrating your prior record of achievement in the following:

  • PhD in a field relevant to food, pharmaceutical or environmental engineering (NB: your PhD must have already been awarded at the time of submitting this application)
  • high-quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences commensurate with opportunity
  • ability to perform independent research with a commitment to interdisciplinary collaborative research
  • working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines.
  • excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders (academic, administrative and support staff) in a courteous and effective manner
  • demonstratable adherence to Occupational Health and Safety.

Additionally, it would be desirable (but not necessary) if you also have experience in relation to any of the following:

  • supervision of students or other researchers
  • teaching with the discipline of Chemical Engineering
  • record of applying for and attracting research grant funding
  • interacting with industry partners
