The Cancer Research UK & King's College London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU) specialises in research to advance cancer prevention, early diagnosis and screening.
We perform research on efficacy, cost-effectiveness and technologies to improve existing and establish new screening programmes.

Our portfolio of both secondary (hospital) and primary (community) care trials includes:

  • Multi-centre international randomised controlled trials of medicinal prevention of cancer often using drug re-purposing
  • Pragmatic trials of screening and diagnostic interventions
  • Trials of behavioural interventions in cancer prevention and screening
  • Trials of diagnostic/screening devices

About the role: 
We are looking for an enthusiastic project manager to join the CPTU team for an exciting new cancer early detection study in 2021.

Supporting the clinical project manager, you will lead on all aspects of project management of clinical research support services required for the NHS research study of a multi-cancer early detection test with GRAIL Bio UK Ltd, NHS England and NHS Improvement. Over 700,000 people across England will be invited to receive a novel CE-marked, blood test for the presence of over 50 cancers. You will support the set-up and delivery of the project in close coordination with GRAIL Inc and key stakeholders.
You will have a strong interest and knowledge of health innovation and health service delivery, and experience of delivering health research projects. You will have excellent organisational and planning skills with an intrinsic interest in improving the health and well-being of communities through translational research and evidence-based innovation.

Integral to project delivery, is the successful management of a range of clinical research support services including:

  • National mobile phlebotomy provision
  • Large scale participant communications including appointment provision and direct letter communications
  • The post holder will ensure that these services are set-up, managed and decommissioned according to contractual specifications, best practice and on time. You will be a project management expert, engaging with team members across King's/GRAIL and third party providers to manage a complex, busy and diverse project workplan.

You will:

  • as the main study focal point for logistics related to clinical research support, manage the effective roll-out of the trial across multiple regions in England
  • line manage a team of coordinators/administrators to deliver on participant recruitment targets whilst following research regulations and good practices
  • with clinical input from the trial's clinical research nursing team, oversee the team responsible for participant communications, scheduling, and follow-up
  • act as on-the-ground managerial contact for research sites recruiting participants at mobile units including for facilities trouble-shooting and participant well-being issues
  • analyse and review performance targets, and other deliverables and take relevant action to achieve study milestones
  • provide ad hoc project management support to Sponsor as required in relation to supplies and samples management

You will line manage a team of coordinators/administrators and will report to and be supervised by the Clinical Project Manager at CPTU. You will coach and line manage other staff. We value your professional growth and you will have opportunities to attend conferences and training.

This post is currently home-working in response to COVID-19. The post holder will also be required to provide a weekend on-call service or fully work on a weekend day on a rota basis during busy periods. Extra hours will be paid as overtime in addition to the stated salary (Saturdays- time and a half (base rate excluding London Allowance), Sundays, bank and public holidays, closure days - double time (base rate excluding London Allowance). For this reason, the postholder must be self-motivated and be able to work independently.

This is a full-time 35 hours per week post.
This is a fixed-term until December 2025.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain key relationships with project partners and third party service providers in a high-profile national research study in cancer screening
  • Advise on key performance indicators for inclusion in third party contracts and monitor third party performance to these
  • Devise and develop project plans for implementation and delivery including large-scale contact of research participants and utilisation of mobile phlebotomy units for participants
  • Oversee the support services required to manage participants' appointment booking activities and recruitment
  • coordinate the mobile phlebotomy units movements in collaboration with the cancer alliance regions and mobile unit third party provider
  • Line manage a team of coordinators/administrators enrolling healthy volunteers in research study nationwide and ensuring systems and processes are effectively implemented to support the Chief Investigator in conducting trials to required standards
  • Lead on query and issue resolution associated with all of the clinical research support services
  • Support the Clinical project manager to develop and oversee KCL budget and financial implementation
  • Ensure trial timelines are monitored and kept to schedule
  • Support the monitoring and coordination of intervention supplies and biological samples if required
  • Develop written procedures for trial processes where appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of training initiatives
  • Any other duties appropriate to the grade as directed by the supervisors
  • Act as primary liaison with external third parties involved in the delivery of the research including call centre,mailout companies and mobile health care providers
  • Support Clinical project manager to work with the Chief Investigator, Sponsor, grant co-applicants, monitors, clinicians, and external third parties on a daily basis to ensure the projects' milestones are met and communicate progress and recruitment challenges
  • Provide expert advice to Clinical project manager and academics/clinical/non-clinical and external collaborators on logistics management
  • Contribute to collaborative decision-making, planning and short and long-term objective setting
  • Problem solve and respond to queries both from within and external to the unit
  • Coordinate workloads of the team and ensure delivery of research support services is conducted in a timely manner and prioritise elements where necessary
  • Use initiative and creativity to resolve issues that might arise and identify issues that require onward reporting to the Clinical project manager
  • Participate in project meetings and produce reports within the context of trial collaborations
  • Develop and disseminate data and analysis relating to recruitment targets and delivery using relevant trial databases and electronic reporting tools
  • Undertake training as required for the post
  • Assess training needs of the research team and design appropriate training programmes or recommend external training as appropriate
  • Monitor performance of the trial team and give guidance and feedback where necessary
  • Create project management policies and oversee their implementation
  • Provide investigators with specialist advice on project management
  • Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment
  • Show consideration to others and maintain good working relations with other departments
  • Give advice on HR/welfare issues according to KCL policy
  • Mentor staff when required

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria:

  • Educated to degree level - or relevant experience in the field
  • Experience of project managing large-scale health or public sector-related projects with defined targets and performance milestones
  • Experience of monitoring third parties to contractual key performance indicators
  • Experience of stakeholder management
  • Highly numerate and ability to show attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Strong delegation skills and ability to develop and implement robust procedures to support individuals within the full capacity of their role
  • Ability to produce high-impact project plans to predict, identify and resolve problems that are critical to the running of the project and plan strategically to avoid them
  • Ability to produce appropriate written procedures and implement them and show attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Experience in providing supervision / line management to staff and managing varied workloads
  • Experience of financial planning and implementation
  • Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise own schedule without supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in the context of scientific writing, reports and good telephone manner. Ability to persuade and deliver information effectively through presentations.
  • Good negotiation and influencing skills
  • Willing to travel within the UK, flexibly to accommodate the needs of the project

Desirable criteria:

  • Formal qualification in project management
  • Experience of supervising other staff
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice, Data Protection Act and the regulations governing the research use of in vitro diagnostics
