About the position

A post-doctoral position is available in experimental fluid mechanics at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, in the Thermo-Fluids research group. The appointment has a duration of 2-4 years, to be determined based on funding at contract signing. The position is financed directly by the Department of Energy & Process Engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to be actively involved in several on-going projects within the Experimental Fluids Lab. On-going projects focus on mixing in channel flows, the bespoke generation of turbulent flows using active grids, and the impact of turbulence on wind energy related problems. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will perform experiments using the new 2.7 m x 1.8 m active grid in the large-scale NTNU wind tunnel and take on deputy leadership tasks relating to group and lab management, PhD and MSc student co-supervision, and paper writing.

Duties of the position

The successful candidate will work in a team with other post-docs and PhD candidates. The candidate will independently perform and set-up experiments under the guidance of the position supervisor.  The successful candidate will also be expected to help supervise PhD and MSc students and take-on some leadership tasks within the broader research group. Specific duties include:

• Performing experiments in the wind tunnel and/or water channel in the Fluids Lab at NTNU.
• Analysing experimental data.
• Preparing journal manuscripts based on experiments and analysis performed at NTNU.
• Assist in the supervision of PhD and MSc students.
• Support lab management and scheduling activities.

It is expected that the position will start within 2021.

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Fluids Mechanics or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Required qualifications:

• A PhD in fluid mechanics.
• Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar packages.
• Experience conducting fluids experiments (e.g., hot-wire anemometry, particle image velocimetry, laser-Doppler anemometry, planar laser-induced fluorescence).
• A track record of publishing papers in top fluids journals, e.g., J Fluid Mech, Exp Fluids, Phys Rev Fluids, or highly regarded general journals.

Preferred selection criteria:

• Experience with CAD software packages (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion360, NX).
• Experience working in teams.
• Experience with LaVision hardware and DaVis software.
• Experience mentoring other PhD or MSc students.
• Good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions

The employment period will be between 2 and 4 years, which will be firmly established at contract signing pending funding availability.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 545 300 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
