BACKGROUND:

The Department of Zoology and Entomology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria is a leading research and teaching department in the disciplines of Zoology, Entomology, Ecology and Wildlife Management in Africa and is internationally recognized for the quality, relevance and impact of its research and graduates. The Department is highly productive with a strong emphasis on biodiversity, systematics and conservation of African fauna, along with the classical disciplines of physiology, behavior, and ecology. Our ecological and entomological research is both fundamental and applied, and we contribute to building capacity through involvement in the BSc extended programme.
Three academic positions are available in the Department at the Lecturer level for suitably qualified individuals with specialization in Applied (Animal) Ecology / Applied Entomology / Zoology. Each of these has core teaching components at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and we are looking for candidates who are passionate about teaching and building capacity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbents will have a typical academic mandate of teaching at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising honours, masters and doctoral students, publishing scientific papers in ISI-rated journals, and presenting at conferences. In addition, each of the successful candidate will be expected to raise research funds, establish a strong research programme and will:

  • Be responsible for curriculum development and upgrading of undergraduate and postgraduate course material;
  • Actively participate in professional scientific societies;
  • Be involved in Departmental, Faculty and/or University administrative tasks
  • Participate in community engagement activities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD degree in the biological sciences focusing on zoology, animal ecology or entomology,
  • A proven track record of research publications in ISI-rated journals in these or related disciplines,
  • Teaching experience at a tertiary level.

Preference will be given to equity applicants who have postdoctoral experience, excellent oral and written communication skills in English, experience in teaching in online environments and have demonstrated the ability to secure research funding.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Please note that shortlisted candidates are required to do two presentations in the Department as part of the interview; one on their research and another on a lecturing topic aligned with the module content identified as part of the self-evaluation of teaching.
