Job Details

Northumbria University is seeking to appoint a co-opted Board Committee member for its Employment and Finance Committee to support the journey  towards its Vision to be a research-rich, business focused, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. We are a challenger institution transforming to take on tomorrow, and grasp the opportunities provided by the national and global drivers shaping UK higher education.

The University Strategy 2018-2023 is the latest step on this journey to shape Northumbria’s future in a time of increasing competition, globalisation and technological change.  The University was ranked 27th in the Guardian University Guide 2021, and 57th in the Times Good University Guide. Northumbria was the top-rated UK young university in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2020, and in the top 40 globally for research citations in the same table.

Achieving strength in education and research, and making the connection between them, gives Northumbria a transformational role: for place, society, culture and the economy, in the North East, the UK and globally.

It is in this exciting context that we are looking for a co-opted Committee member to work alongside our Governors on the Employment and Finance Committee.

The Board of Governors is the University’s ultimate strategic decision-making body, and supports the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, and the University Executive management team, to lead and deliver the University Strategy. It delegates certain responsibilities to Committees to provide the capacity and expertise for more detailed consideration of specific areas of activity. Further details are provided on the University’s Leadership and Governance webpages.  The work of Board Committees is often supported by co-opted members, who are full voting members of the Committees without being Governors of the University.  They bring specialist knowledge and expertise in key areas specific to the Committee’s responsibilities.

We are interested in hearing from individuals from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about the transformative power of education and research, with current or previous senior leadership experience in estates, property and asset management at the strategic level; experience of the North East property market is particularly desirable.

The University Today

Northumbria employs around 3,000 academic and professional support staff and has a student population of around 30,000, including over 8,500 international students from 137 countries. Recent developments on the Newcastle city centre campus  include a Student Central building and facilities for Computing and Information Sciences and Architecture.  Our geographical footprint now includes campuses in London and Amsterdam, with established and developing academic partnerships across the world.
