We seek to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor, tenable from 1 September 2021. We welcome applications from candidates with research and teaching specialisms within musicology broadly defined, which enhance and diversify our current strengths. Your specialism may be in any kind of music (including elite and vernacular genres) and period (from early to contemporary music cultures) and may be interdisciplinary in nature. You will contribute to high-quality teaching and curriculum development at UG and PG levels, including the Department's ongoing efforts to address challenges relating to gender equality, race and/or decolonisation. You will conduct high-quality research in your field of expertise and will be encouraged to develop connections and interdisciplinary dialogue between your field and other areas supported by the University, as well as with audiences beyond academia. You will be entitled to apply for research leave and research support in accordance with University and Departmental guidelines.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching while allowing you unrivalled opportunities for career progression and professional development. The University provides a working and teaching environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect. You will be expected to demonstrate your commitment to these key principles as part of the assessment process. The Department actively promotes the values of equality, diversity and inclusion, and in joining us, you would contribute to ongoing initiatives and conversations to further these principles; see https://www.durham.ac.uk/departments/academic/music/about-us/diversity-initiatives/.

Durham's Department of Music is one of the very best in the UK and worldwide, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Ranked third overall amongst music departments in the last national research evaluation (REF2014), we attract exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and focus on high-quality research-led teaching. We have a thriving and supportive research culture, with funding from national and international research councils and foundations and a community of postdoctoral fellows in the Department. In student-facing guides and league tables we are regularly ranked as the number one Music Department in the UK (Complete University Guide 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021; The Sunday Times 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021; The Guardian 2019 and 2021). We have internationally renowned research strengths in musicology, theory and analysis, music technology and computational musicology, music psychology, ethnomusicology, composition, and performance. Our strategic priorities include nurturing innovative connections and interdisciplinary dialogue between these areas and enhancing the diversity and inclusivity of our research base. We also benefit from University policies which support staff work-life balance and needs, for example by offering additional research leave following a period of parental leave.
