Job description
The Department of Physics is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Biological Physics to establish a group undertake internationally leading research in the area of Biological and/or Soft matter Physics and take a lead role in the delivery of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. We particularly welcome applications from female and black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented in the University at this level.
 
The appointee will have research interests in experimental or theoretical biological physics with the aim of consolidating and diversifying existing research within the Department, which currently includes research on super-resolution imaging; fluorescence microscopy; Raman spectroscopy; SPM techniques and mechanobiology, combined with coarse-grained and all-atom simulations. To this end, the areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, molecular, cell and tissue mechanics; molecular motors; natural and naturally-inspired molecular machines; biophysical chemistry; biomimetic materials, bio-inspired engineering and biomechanics. 
 
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract

Key responsibilities

  • To establish, develop and manage a research group with the potential to become internationally leading  
  • To contribute to developing and enhancing the research profile of the Department, Faculty and College, including establishing a track record of high quality publication and research funding 
  • To devise and instigate novel, collaborative research programmes within King’s and beyond 
  • To build up industrial contacts to aid both their own research as well as departmental education and funding 
  • To disseminate research findings, promote your scientific profile and develop new collaborations at national and international conferences, and as appropriate, to the general public including Outreach programmes run by the Department or College 
  • To advise/collaborate with others in the Department on grants/projects, early stage commercialisation and technology innovation as appropriate 
  • Identifying and nurturing the translation of research  
  • To take a lead role in the delivery of teaching activities within the Department, and to their planning and organisation, in accordance with established departmental practice 
  • To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning 
  • To supervise and train postgraduate students to ensure their effective development 
  • Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Head of Department and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support/problems 
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination process as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning 
  • Act in departmental administrative or managerial roles within and on behalf of the departments, as agreed with the Head of Department 
  • Embed diversity and equality within all activities 
  • Engage in professional development as appropriate 
  • Attend and participate in appropriate research seminars/conferences within subject related areas 
  • To conduct risk assessments and take responsibility for the health and safety of students and researchers as required 
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria

  • PhD in a relevant area of physics or related discipline (e.g. physical chemistry)
  • To have developed a strong and distinctive research vision within the field, which complements existing research in the Department. Including an outstanding research record appropriate to career stage, evidence of significant impact in the field, and an excellent record of original research publications 
  • Externally recognised authority in own subject area of research
  • Possess in-depth understanding of own specialism to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field, and the ability to conduct high-quality research in particular specialism
  • Ability to teach relevant subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the Department
  • Good presentational, organisational and administrative skills
  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Potential to provide academic leadership
  • Ability to lead, and function within, a team
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
  • Proactive in creating and developing interactions and collaborations with colleagues 

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in supervising research students
  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Success in obtaining research grants
  • To understand institutional management systems and the wider higher education environment
