We invite applications to join our team in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment. The role will involve delivery of our very well established BSc (Hons) Building Surveying.

You will join a strong school wide team delivering successful, professionally accredited, undergraduate course in Building Surveying, utilising well-equipped purpose built facilities. We work in a collaborative and cross disciplinary culture where interacting freely across the school and with colleagues in other schools is encouraged to gain a unique insight into impactful problem domains. We seek an individual capable of teaching and undertaking research aligned to the research activities of the school that cut across engineering and the built environment.

To support the Building Surveying programme and other provision within the school, the School of Engineering and the Built Environment is seeking to appoint to one of the following roles:

Lecturer = £37,505 to £40,766 per annum

Senior Lecturer = £46,376 to £50,408 per annum

Applicants will teach across a variety of different levels and courses, topics and areas including building pathology, construction technology and residential/commercial surveying and will be expected to have a strong construction pathology/technology and residential/commercial surveying background and some experience of the relevant professional bodies competencies (RICS or CIOB) with priority given to shortlisting candidates with most of these areas of expertise. Applicants are expected to have a good research record in one or more of these subject areas.

Duties and Responsibilities for both grades:

  • Providing an excellent student experience
  • Acting in accord with the University’s strategy, policy and procedures
  • Using appropriate learning, teaching, support and assessment methods
  • Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Setting and marking of assessments and providing constructive feedback and feedforward
  • Reflective practice as a method for improving performance
  • Participate in outreach activities to aid in recruitment
  • Pursuing research leading to high quality publications
  • Contributing to curriculum development
  • Addressing the pastoral needs of students
  • Participating in academic-related administration

Essential Skills and Experience for both grades

  • Demonstrate recent industry or equivalent academic experience
  • Demonstrate excellent teaching in higher education or have presented regularly to technical audiences in an industry setting
  • Have a strong digital background with knowledge of relevant industrial standards, technical and software requirements
  • Demonstrate a strong building surveying or similar field, knowledge and some experience of the relevant professional bodies’ competencies (either RICS or CIOB)
  • Show potential to develop and sustain externally funded research work 
  • Demonstrate that research and innovation is informing and improving the curriculum and teaching methods
  • Show potential to build collaborative internal and external relationships
  • Show excellent communication skills and experience of successfully working as part of a team
  • Depending on the level that you join at, you will be expected to have a PhD or nearing completion i.e. viva pending, or equivalent qualification 

In addition, for Senior Lecturer grade you will be expected to:  

  • Be responsible for managing taught programmes, including oversight of day to day operational processes (e.g. timetabling, assessment, examination systems, progression and retention) and programme accreditation processes
  • Contribute to and ensure that programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University
  • Manage and lead own and collaborative research and / or enterprise activity producing high quality outputs with demonstrable impact, in particular influencing leading edge practice
  • Provide and contribute to academic and team leadership and development, for example by agreeing work plans to ensure that programmes are delivered effectively or organising the work of a team by agreeing objectives and work plans

Desirable skills and experience for both grades 

  • Track record of successful networking and community management
  • Interest in cross disciplinary collaboration 
  • MRICS or MCIOB established membership
  • Working practice/experience of Revit and BIM related software
