Applications are invited for the posts of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Social Work

The Research Fellows will be joining a multi-disciplinary team researching the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities. This exciting UKRI ESRC funded project: “Co-POWeR: Consortium on Practices Of Wellbeing and Resilience in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Families and Communities explores the intersectional nature of forms of exclusion and disadvantage on the lives of different Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities cohorts across the UK during the pandemic, with the aim of highlighting policies and practices that promote wellbeing and resilience.

The overall project is led by Professor Iyiola Solanke at the University of Leeds and involves five interlinked work packages (WPs) using mixed methods and community participatory approaches with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities to investigate the effects on different age groups of challenges including policing, child welfare, caring, and physical activity and nutrition. The fifth work package will produce creative media resources to highlight and strengthen the visibility and themes of the other work packages.

These two posts are for a Research Fellows working on WP 2 – Children Young People and Their Families  with Professor Anna Gupta in the Department of Social Work at Royal Holloway, and Professors Claudia Bernard (Goldsmiths) and Monica Lakhanpaul (UCL). WP2 will primarily use qualitative methods, including creative and participatory approaches with young people, focus groups and interviews with parents/carers, community groups and professional. The postholder will be involved setting up the study, data collection, analysis, creation of outputs and dissemination activities. Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis is essential, and experience of research with children and young people highly desirable. Also crucial is an interest in applying the values of co-production to work with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities.  

The post will suit someone who is dynamic, proactive, flexible and has the ability to work independently and cross-disciplinary with cultural sensitivity. You will bring to the post experience of qualitative research with individuals and communities, an understanding of the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic families in the UK, project management and IT skills, and an ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders. 

This full-time post is for up to 17 months (until 11 August 2022). The research fellow will, COVID-19 restrictions permitted, need to undertake travel in England, as the data collection will take place in London, the Midlands and Yorkshire. The post holder will need to be able to start in April 2021 and will require a DBS check.
