The Department and role purpose

The post-holder is expected to develop and draw upon technical and domain context of research computing systems, to ensure the provision of appropriate research computing platforms, through forming strong collegiate research relationships with Academics at all levels in the department and across the organisation. The post holder will provide consultation and specialist knowledge to co

lleagues within the research community, and will ensure effective knowledge transfer both across the institution and externally on matters of expertise. The post holder will be part of the broader network of research computing support, which shares and develops the state of practice of research computing, enhancing the support services ARC provides: working on physical deployments with teams in CIS, Estates and/or external providers as appropriate.

Role responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day management for the delivery of a high-quality research computing facility/platform and service to ensure research, research-led teaching and knowledge exchange outputs.
  • Collaborate with internal and external academics, industry and technical specialists to support the delivery of research projects, contributing to the generation of external income.
  • Take responsibility for the design, set-up, maintenance and integrity of research computing facilities, technology and resources within Earth Sciences and ARC.
  • Provide specialist technical problem-solving advice to inform activity and project planning, continuous improvement and service development. Provide guidance and advice on University health and safety and compliance issues in specialist area.
  • Apply maintenance schedules to ensure the smooth, safe and efficient use of technology, facilities and services to research and research-led teaching activities.
  • Supervise, support and advise users during practical and test teaching, learning and research work activities, projects, and self-directed sessions.
  • Provide support to ensure the delivery of undergraduate and post graduate teaching and learning activities, and income generation where appropriate.
  • Develop, modify and optimise protocols and methodologies for the delivery of research computing platforms within appropriate levels of risk.
  • Contribute to the planning, design and delivery of research outputs and prepare innovative teaching/research proposals.
  • Build and maintain relationships within the research communities at the University and beyond, actively seeking opportunities for collaboration with researchers, regionally and nationally, on projects and activities of mutual benefits, including grant preparation.
  • Contribute to the broader community of practice for research computing professionals, acting as a key point of reference to the community within the area of specialism.
  • Undertake development work to improve efficiency and effectiveness of research computing platforms.
  • Contribute to promotional events and presentations at conferences.
  • Liaise with internal and external agencies, suppliers, local authorities, industries and visitors where appropriate.
  • Design, build and maintain complex, specialist research computing equipment, systems and appliances.
  • Take responsibility for monitoring and updating risk assessments and safety procedures, providing guidance to others where necessary.
  • Record, monitor and collate information, analyse patterns and trends as part of teaching, learning and research activities.
  • Provide advice on digital tools and infrastructure to ensure an appropriate approach to developing world class research.
