The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) is a large, multi-disciplinary Faculty with a broad academic profile, substantial research achievements and a commitment to public engagement.

The Faculty comprises seven Schools (Communication and Arts; Education; Historical and Philosophical Inquiry; Languages and Cultures; Music; Political Science and International Studies; Social Science), two research Institutes (Institute for Social Science Research; Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities), two museums (Anthropology Museum and the RD Milns Antiquities Museum), a Centre for Policy Futures, and several school-based research centres. It also plays host to the Institute for Modern Languages.

The complementary nature of our disciplines attracts a diverse cohort of international and domestic students, with 640 research higher degree students, approximately 1,600 students in postgraduate coursework degrees and close to 7,000 undergraduates.

About This Opportunity

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences currently seeks a Lecturer\Senior Lecturer to engage in the undergraduate teaching of art history in the Western Civilisation major.

The Western Civilisation major is an interdisciplinary sequence of courses developed by academic staff at The University of Queensland. Taught in small seminars of approximately 10 students, these courses follow a ‘great books’ format and are designed to encourage close reading and critical reflection.

As part of the Western Civilisation faculty, you will join an enthusiastic, collaborative teaching team that prioritises student experience and intellectual rigour. Teaching in this major will bring you into contact with some of the brightest and most engaged students that The University of Queensland has to offer.

Course focus will centre on the teaching of a survey course involving the close analysis and discussion of individual foundational works in Western Art.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Teaching into the Western Civilisation major, with a focus on ‘icons’ of Western Art.
• Contribute to other courses in the Western Civilisation major, which contain visual components.
• Advising Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students as required.
• Maintaining a program of research, including scholarly publication.
• Working with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research projects across the School, Faculty, and University where relevant.
• Fostering the School’s relations with schools, professional bodies and the wider community.

Our Ideal Candidate

Alongside the completion of a PhD in the area of Art History (or closely related field), we welcome applications from individuals who demonstrate expert knowledge in the area of Western Art, along with an understanding of Western Art’s intersections with the fields of politics, literature, history and philosophy.

Successful Level B candidates will also demonstrate:

• Evidence of undergraduate teaching experience in the required areas of expertise.
• Academic supervisory skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote academic discipline at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

In addition to the essentials for Level B above, Level C candidates must have the following:

• A developing international profile for research, evidenced by an outstanding record of publication.
• Experience in academic administration at a disciplinary level.
• A track record in the production of course materials for courses at a range of undergraduate levels.
• Experience in obtaining and successfully managing external research funds, especially grants and fellowships, and other research project funding

The position reports directly to the Director of the Program in Western Civilisation and has a functional reporting line to the Head, School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry or the School of Communication and Arts.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for five years at Academic level B/C (level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications, experience and academic achievements).

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level B will be in the range AUD$99,542 - $118,206, plus super of up to 17% (total FTE package will be in the range of $116,465 - $138,301).

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level C will be in the range AUD$121,939 - $140,603, plus super of up to 17% (total FTE package will be in the range of $142,669 - $164,506).
