The Department and role purpose
The Department of Biosciences contains a Proteomic facility that provides protein analytical support to diverse departmental research groups as well as services to industrial partners. The facility has a Sciex TripleTOF 6600 mass spectrometer for data-dependent or -independent LC-MS-MS data acquisition. Sample types range in complexity from purified single proteins to complex cell lysates and both labelled and label-free protein quantification is undertaken. The facility supports research across the Department, the wider University and external companies, providing a service for high impact publications promoting research in a wide range of research areas.
The role of the proteomics technician is to assist the Facility Manager in the delivery of analytical services to users. Specifically in the preparation of mass spectrometer samples, maintenance and operation of facility equipment and data processing and evaluation. This will enhance sample throughput capacity. The role-holder will help develop methods for enrichment of specific protein modifications in samples and support internal and external researchers in their implementation. They will provide quality technical expertise to facilitate proteomic research.

- Responsible for organising and maintaining technical and experimental facilities, including maintenance of the mass spectrometer and liquid chromatography setup, system quality control and organisation of reagents (Labsafe).
- Provide technical guidance and advice to solve problems and help shape the delivery of teaching, learning and research outcomes.
- Assist in the evaluation and implementation of sample preparation methods new to the facility.
- Carry out a range of activities that includes the commissioning, construction and set-up of test and experimental scenarios and practical sessions, including the development of new methods within the department for the enrichment of specific peptide modifications.
- Construct, test, repair and calibrate tools, resources, equipment, components and instrumentation,
- Supervise key stakeholders where necessary, including supporting undergraduate and postgraduates in their proteomic experiments.
- Deliver projects that demonstrate a high-standard of accuracy, complexity, originality and excellence.
- Liaise and network with specialist professionals to exchange knowledge and ideas internally and externally to the organisation, including interacting with specialists from companies using the proteomic facilities, scientists from other institutions and specialists maintaining the analytical instruments.
- Take responsibility for carrying out risk assessments for laboratory experimental procedures, and incident resolution.
- Record, monitor and collate information, analyse patterns and trends as part of teaching and research activities.
- Undertake literature and database searches to be aware of new developments.
- Responsible for keeping accurate and comprehensive records of samples and results obtained therefrom.
- Ensure timely and complete data-transfer to secure university storage.

Person specification - skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience required
