The Department of Translation sets out to provide an education in bilingual studies which can nourish graduates with competence in Chinese and English as well as capacity to think independently. One of its central features is the equal emphasis on translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. Another feature is the importance attached to the socio-cultural environment of the Chinese and English languages. The appointee will be required to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: Practical Translation, Interpreting, Translation and Culture. Excellent command of Chinese and English is a must, and experience of teaching translation theory will be an advantage. Candidates should normally have a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline and have substantial relevant experience (normally not less than eight years in universities), and experience in course development.
Applicants are required to provide information on their research records and evidence of quality teaching. Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential. The appointee is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and to engage actively in research and contribute to the scholarly activities of the department.
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee. Appointment will be normally made on a contract basis for up to two years.
