Healthy Buildings Program Manager
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. EH&S is seeking an experienced health and safety professional to manage the Healthy Buildings Program (HBP) at Stanford University. You will lead a team of industrial hygiene and safety specialists to help maintain standards of health and comfort within the indoor environment and other workplace settings at Stanford. Primary occupational safety and health services provided by the HBP focus on worker health, indoor environmental quality, and construction/facilities support on hazardous building materials management of asbestos, lead, and mold. This requires productive collaboration with a wide range of campus stakeholders.
In addition to providing routine EH&S program management services, staff are to provide support as needed during University emergencies.
In this role, you will:
- Design, develop, and oversee the implementation of the Healthy Buildings Program and allocate appropriate staffing and other resources to achieve the objectives.
- Build and manage strategic relationships, maintaining a high level of interaction and collaboration with clients and facility/departmental safety peers across the university.
- Advise EH&S leadership of legislative agendas and ramifications for maintaining healthy buildings and work environments.
- Supervise and provide guidance and development for your direct reports.
- Represent the university as a designated senior safety officer for relevant compliance-related matters.
- In conjunction with Assistant Director of Occupational Safety and Health, develop, monitor, and maintain control of the unit’s financial budgets.
To be successful in the role, you will bring:
- Bachelor of Science degree in related allied/scientific field and five years of progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relative experience. Advanced degree and/or certification(s) or experience may be required for some programs.
- Understanding of occupational safety and health principles and applications, with demonstrated ability to direct and conduct effective quantitative/qualitative exposure and health risk assessment.
- Leadership skills and experience with effective implementation of operational programs.
- Organizational, analytical, problem solving, and project management abilities.
- Construction/facility safety management of hazardous material (i.e., asbestos, lead, PCBs).
- Broad knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, consensus standards, and current developments in occupational safety and health.
- Excellent oral and written risk communication skills, both orally and in writing, being able to effectively communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely with diverse audiences including faculty, students, and staff, with strong risk communication skills,
- Experience with mentoring/coaching junior through senior level industrial hygiene and safety staff.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective health and safety training.
- Demonstrated experience interacting with external regulatory agencies.
- Ability to lead professionally in emergency/crisis laboratory situations.
- Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.
In addition, our preferred requirements include:
- Masters of Science degree in allied/scientific field. A combination of one or more certifications: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Facility Management credentials (i.e., w/IFMA)
- Building sustainability credentials (i.e., w/USGBC-LEED)
- Asbestos and lead safety (i.e., AHERA Inspector and Supervisor, CDPH-LRC)
