Position Focus:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Costing, Yale School of Medicine, the position will be responsible for conducting financial analyses, preparing financial reporting and modeling across the YSM Controller’s Office and YSM Central Finance as needed.

Collaborates with the YSM Finance staff to compile, analyze and summarize data. Consults with management on optimum organization of data and development of reports to aid in decision making. Presents recommendations to YSM Finance leadership. Position will support all areas of the YSM Controller’s unit on ad hoc analysis which will vary based on the finance calendar deliverables and special requests as they arise. Position will be an added resource for complex analysis beyond the scope of existing staff.

Position will focus on expanding capacity for costing analysis on USP rates, F&A Base and Facilities. Analyst will perform ad hoc analysis in support of the YSM Controller, the Associate Dean of Finance, the Deputy Dean and other YSM Central Finance Managers as needed.

Principal Responsibilities:
 

  • Collaborates with managers of the various units to compile and summarize data.
  • Performs monthly financial review and provides technical analysis to determine present and future financial performance.
  • Consults with management on optimum organization of data and development of reports to aid in decision-making. Presents recommendations to leadership
  • Consults with various users and managers to create accurate and meaningful reports.
  • Conducts ad hoc financial analysis Contributes to the implementation of processes, practices and systems to provide assurance that data is accurate and reliable.
  • Assist with the administration of USP’s including reviewing rates calculations for accuracy and ensuring compliance with university policies.
  • Support the F&A rate setting process as well as the space planning and budgeting processes.

Essential Duties

  1. Financial Modeling and Forecasting. Provides technical analysis to determine present and future financial performance. Organizes information from a variety of sources for use in analyzing future plans and forecasts. Collaborates with all levels of management, both internally and externally, to gather, analyze, summarize, prepare, and present recommendations regarding financial plans and other complex financial matters. Researches and evaluates information to resolve issues and makes recommendations. Develops and/or executes complex financial models.
  2. Financial Analysis and Reporting. Analyzes and synthesizes information and designs and creates accurate and timely reports. Designs financial reporting to meet the compliance needs of internal and external users. Extracts and consolidates data from multiple sources.
  3. Financial Methods and Systems. Contributes to the planning and improvement of practices, processes and systems. Collaborates with all levels of internal and external contacts to carry out department goals. Provides a high level of service that cultivates and maintains strong working relationships and communicates effectively; takes ownership and accountability for timeliness, accuracy and relationship management.
  4. Strategic Resource. Translates department finance goals into objectives. Identifies and raises potential financial opportunities, issues, risks, ideas and solutions. Identifies the appropriate stakeholders to include in consultations, communications, approvals or buy-ins for designing and implementing changes.
  5. Compliance and Risk Management. Establishes, implements and/or maintains strong internal controls in areas of assigned responsibility to provide reasonable assurance of effective and appropriate resource use, accurate financial information, and adherence to contractual obligations and agreements, policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements.
  6. Mentors, leads and/or supervises staff.
  7. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated application of financial, accounting and economic concepts.

Strong analytical and problem-solving competencies

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Well-developed computer knowledge and a strong proficiency in spreadsheet and database query tools.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Well-developed financial analysis and data mining skills and an understanding of financial models..

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

CPA certification is preferred.
