Northumbria University is seeking to appoint an outstanding scholar working in the field of Eighteenth-Century Studies to a permanent Senior Lectureship (grade 7), within the English Literature and Creative Writing subject group in the Department of Humanities. The Humanities Department brings together 80 academic staff and 800 students in English Literature, Creative Writing, English Language, American Studies, History and Music. In line with recent appointments, we are developing greater diversity in our research and teaching and particularly welcome applications from scholars who have expertise in one or more of the following areas: race, gender studies, print culture, medical humanities, environmental humanities, and visual culture.

Northumbria has unique strengths in Eighteenth-Century Studies. Colleagues in Eighteenth-Century Studies currently lead major research projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the AHRC and the British Academy, and contribute to the leadership of key scholarly societies and journals in the field. Scholars in Eighteenth-Century Studies participate in the Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Studies Research Group at Northumbria, and the North East Forum for Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Studies seminar. We are home to a thriving community of postgraduate and postdoctoral Eighteenth-Century scholarship and from 2021 to 2026 we will host a fellow jointly funded with the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. The Department has a commitment to engagement with cultural and social enterprises beyond the University and the English subject group in particular has played a pioneering role in developing cultural partnerships in the North East and nationally.

We seek to appoint a candidate with an excellent research profile in the long eighteenth century, who will make a strong contribution to our submission to future Research Excellence Frameworks. You will hold a PhD or equivalent, and will already be developing a publication track record of exceptional quality, with clear plans to develop funding applications. You will show excellent teaching experience and a commitment to working beyond the academy in partnership with others.

We particularly welcome applications candidates from underrepresented communities in this area, including those from minority ethnic backgrounds.
