Become our new Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic is the university's chief academic officer. Learning is at the forefront of what we do, our teaching environment drives our strategy, and we work to ensure this is respected and admired. In this outstanding opportunity, you will lead and develop the University's capabilities, reputation and provision for continued high-quality academic development and student support. This is focussed particularly on the strategic direction of the university's education and on strengthening integrated academic practice in terms of teaching, research and service. As such, you will play a central leadership role in driving our commitment to provide remarkable learning experiences for all students.

Key focus areas include:

  • Lead, shape and drive the strategy and development of AUT's academic portfolio, this includes articulating a clear direction and providing leadership consistent with the University's vision, strategic direction and desired culture
  • Plan, lead and manage academic performance across the University, including cross-university cohesion and continuous improvement in curriculum development
  • Lead and develop our academic administration, including chairing academic committees and reviewing and improving academic processes
  • Work closely with relevant leaders to provide a student-centred educational experience

As the senior deputy to the Vice-Chancellor, you will act for him in his absence. You will work very closely and collaboratively with the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, the Deans and Pro Vice-Chancellors of the five university faculties, and with the Pro Vice Chancellor Māori Advancement and Assistant Vice-Chancellor Pacific Advancement. You will also be assisted by a number of key reports including the Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching, the Academic Director, the University Librarian, the Group Director Student Services and the Head of Student Success.

Applications and Selection Criteria

We welcome applications from senior academics of high standing with significant senior academic (or other relevant) leadership and staff management experience. We request applicants submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including full publication record) and a statement addressing the following key selection criteria:

  1. A record of distinguished academic achievement and research appropriate for appointment as a professor. A PhD (or equivalent) is expected.
  2. Extensive senior academic (or other relevant) leadership experience, ideally both within and outside New Zealand. This must include a minimum of five years in senior academic management roles, for example: leading a significant university division (either a faculty, very large school or a central division). Please highlight success developing and sustaining growth.
  3. Significant experience leading key strategic changes demonstrating an excellent understanding of operational, cultural and environmental change management.
  4. Outstanding resilience, interpersonal, negotiation and diplomacy skills, combined with a coaching and consultative approach to leadership. Please briefly discuss one situation when you recently demonstrated these competencies.

Further Information:

  • Start Date - the successful candidate would ideally be able to join AUT in the second half of 2021.
  • The successful candidate will secure a 5-year renewable term. A competitive remuneration package will be agreed with the successful applicant, commensurate with skills and experience.
