MACHINIST B, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to join a facility at the forefront of plasma physics and fusion energy research.  The primary responsibility will be to work in PSFC’s machine shop to machine components, fixtures, tooling, or any other hardware to support the team.  Will use--under minimal supervision--horizontal and vertical milling machines, horizontal and vertical band saws, belt/disc sanders, rotary grinders, and buffers that are typical in a machine shop. The position involves working with minimal supervision and interacting with students, researchers, and engineers as part of a fast-paced, team-oriented project.

The PSFC is located on the main MIT campus in Cambridge, MA and comprises a team of students, scientists, and engineering staff jointly pursuing fusion research at national laboratory-like scale. The PSFC recently announced a new, accelerated pathway to fusion energy that is based on the development and demonstration of the world’s highest performing superconducting fusion magnets and thedesign of the first net-energy fusion device--the SPARC tokamak.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: training as a machinist and at least two years’ applicable experience; ability to work directly from prints and familiarity with working from digital files; experience working with materials such as aluminum, steel, copper, and G10; familiarity with modern machine tools and with speeds and feeds and the selection of proper tooling; ability to setup, maintain, and operate machine tools with minimal supervision; and experience using CNC lathes and multi-axis milling machines outfitted with ProtoTRAK controllers.
