Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the Director of IP and Operations is responsible for management of Penn's multi million dollar patent estate, as well as compliance obligations related to the portfolio. The position also oversees operations including routine HR and facilities responsibilities. The Director of IP and Operations also serves as the primary content manager of PCI's database and the lead on key third party relationships. The Director of IP and Operations supports the Chief Operations Officer in all aspects of IP and Operations management, serving as a strategic leader and voice for IP and Operations affairs at PCI, and is expected to function independently and autonomously to regularly resolve disputes, address changes and questions, and tackle personnel inquiries and conflicts.  In the absence or unavailability of the Chief Operations Officer, the Director functions in a deputy capacity as the dedicated go-to person for IP and Operations inquiries, decision making and advice, and performs delegated duties from Chief Operations Officer as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of related work experience working with technology transfer, patent prosecution, federal compliance, and/or operations related to technology commercialization, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Must have 3+ years experience managing a team with demonstrated results. Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and closing. Proven ability to work under time constraints while adhering to strict deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, team player. Experience with Microsoft Office Applications required.

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience overseeing  patent prosecution workflow
  • Working knowledge of patent prosecution deadlines, forms, processes, and terminology
  • Working knowledge of federal and foundation compliance tracking and reporting
  • Understanding of university technology transfer, legal documents and/or intellectual property
  • Experience managing mission continuity and operations
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with databases, previous work with Inteum database is ideal
  • Attention to detail with clear understanding of how to prioritize workload and manage multi-task projects appropriately
  • Excellent customer service including strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with a high degree of initiative
