The Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute is dedicated to understanding how the brain gives rise to mental life and behavior, both in health and in disease. Our research community draws from and informs multiple disciplines, including neuroscience, medicine, engineering, psychology, education and law. The discoveries that arise from these collaborations will transform our understanding of the human brain, provide novel treatments for brain disorders, and promote brain health throughout the lifespan.

The Gene Vector and Virus Core (GVVC) lab is seeking a Life Science Technician to join our team to help on the production and purification of virus for neuroscience research. You will perform and support lab experiments working under staff supervision to support various research projects. Your work will focus primarily on providing bacterial molecular biology support, mammalian tissue culture, and virus purification using ultracentrifugation techniques. This work will contribute to several projects ongoing in the lab that are essential to provide services to Stanford users as well as our external community of neurobiologists. Essential Job Functions 

In this role, you will:

  • Perform molecular biology and mammalian cell culture techniques to generate virus-based reagents for neuroscience-related experimental applications under direct instruction from supervisor/staff.
  • Contribute to projects for the purpose of producing and purifying new viral vectors under direct supervision.
  • Employ basic molecular techniques and bacterial related work using aseptic techniques provided by supervisor.
  • Must keep an accurate laboratory notebook for all studies and perform basic mathematical analysis.
  • Assist with media preparation and other lab solutions/chemicals as well as monitor, order and store lab supplies
  • May also be required to highlight and/or recommend changes in protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems.

Qualifications 

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Two years of college coursework in neuroscience or a related scientific discipline, or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience 
  • Experience with bacteria, molecular techniques and mammalian tissue culture.
  • Demonstrate aptitude in foresight, planning, and ability to organize as required by research.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Two years of laboratory experience or equivalent relevant work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours. 
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds 
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds 
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job. 
  • Position may require repetitive motion.
