Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

PPPL invites applications for the position of Project Controls Manager for a variety of construction and Science Projects in support of the Lab Mission. This Position reports, functionally, to the Project Management Office and is matrixed to Projects as needed across the Lab.

Responsibilities

  • Input and configuration control of project specific schedule and cost information into the master project resource loaded schedule in line with the most current government and industry requirements and guidelines for EVM implementation to ensure compliance with PPPL’s Project Management System.
    • Collection and update of project status as reported by project line management on a monthly basis and as needed.
    • Change Management - Preparation and execution of project change requests
  • Provision of up to date cost, schedule, and variance status information, and modeling of proposed alternatives and options as proposed by the project manager as needed.
  • Thorough independent review and analysis of project schedules for proper sequence, logical relationships, and critical path analysis.
  • In-depth review and analysis of project performance providing clear results of variances and identification of specific task(s) causing them.
  • Project cost and schedule risk analysis/identification of potential schedule and cost issues. Pro-actively informing Project management of potential risks and problems and proposal of resolutions with sufficient time to mitigate the impact(s).
  • Update and review of project documentation, provision of charts, graphs and presentation materials and status reports as needed.
  • Contribution to the development of the organization’s project management/earned value policies. Maintaining functional proficiency through participation in earned value and project reviews.
  • Provide review of proposed projects and what-if analysis using data mining techniques from historical project cost, schedule, and performance archives.
  • Other duties as assigned by matrixed projects.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related discipline
  • 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience analyzing project performance management or the equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • 5 years of experience implementing EVMS project controls
  • 5 (five) years of experience with Primavera scheduling software, or equivalent
  • Experience in Deltek Cobra, Deltek Acumen Fuse and Acumen Risk In-depth knowledge of Project Management concepts
  • CAPM and/or PMI-SP preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Software Requirements

    • Proficient knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Powerpoint, with extensive and demonstrable experience in advanced Excel functions, and professional development and presentation of powerpoint (or equivalent) slideshows.
    • 5 (five) years of experience with Primavera scheduling software, or equivalent.
    • Demonstrated past experience in Deltek Cobra, Deltek Acumen Fuse and Acumen Risk.
  • General Requirements:

    • Comprehensive earned value management knowledge and experience in interpretation, execution, and application of project management theories, principles, and techniques for cost and schedule systems for project and program portfolios.
    • Ability to use computerized performance measurement systems for schedule, cost and risk management.
    • Thorough understanding of variance analysis.
    • Experience with risk management and analysis.
    • Knowledge of WBS, Sequencing, Resource loading and other controls.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
    • Strong ability to collaborate with project managers and teams.
    • Ability to take broad concepts and raw data and develop timely and accurate information to be used by all levels of Lab leadership.

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Project Management or Business
  • CAPM and/or PMI-SP preferred

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is primarily remote during Pandemic conditions, but will transition to full time on-site as health conditions improve.
