At TU Dresden, the Institute of Manufacturing Science and Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft seek to fill the

Chair (W3) of Laser and Surface Technology

to be exercised in conjunction with

the membership in the board of Directors of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS

in a joint appointment procedure at the earliest possible date. TU Dresden and Fraunhofer IWS wish to further intensify their successful cooperation. The chair to be filled will therefore bundle and further develop the competences in the field of laser material processing and surface technology.

The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering has a long tradition in the fields of materials development, production technology and energy efficiency. In terms of teaching, it is responsible for the study programmes Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and Natural Materials Technology, Materials Science, Textile and Clothing Technology, Mechatronics and Regenerative Energy Systems and has numerous contributions to the study programmes offered by other faculties.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS is one of the most important research institutes in the field of applied surface technologies, beam technology and laser-based material processing in Europe. Current research focuses include joining technologies, additive manufacturing processes and laser-based production technology.

In your new position, you will competently represent the main topics in research and teaching as well as in research and technology management towards research funding associations and research partners and further develop the strategic connection between the university and the Fraunhofer Institute. The research projects defined by you should have a strong focus on applicability and allow for a high degree of freedom in research. The chair is associated with the membership in the management of the Fraunhofer IWS, which includes the scientific, professional and entrepreneurial steering and management of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and the Fraunhofer overall strategy.

The chair is based on your expertise in research and teaching in one or more of the following areas: laser material processing, beam shaping, surface technology and systems engineering. Within the study programme of Mechanical Engineering, you will develop and implement contemporary and innovative teaching concepts. Both pedagogical and didactic skills are required as well as your willingness and ability to conduct courses and examinations in English and German. Furthermore, we expect your active participation in academic self-administration. You possess many years of management experience of large, interdisciplinary research groups, experience in strategic planning, acquisition and implementation of large-volume national and international research and development projects in various business areas as well as skills in increasing the efficiency of development processes and in technology exploitation. International work and teaching experience and/or experience in international projects and scientific-political networking are a plus. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).
