  • Salary range: $69,605 - $82,518 per annum (plus 17% superannuation)

About the Role

The Senior Technical Officer: Environmental Science provides expertise in environmental biology/ecology/soil science and/or geology/earth science and undertakes a broad range of technical duties to support STEM’s teaching, research, and commercial activities and provides support and services to the Future Industries Institute.

Core Responsibilities

  • Laboratory, practical, and field class assistance and demonstrations for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching i.e. set-up, equipment and consumables preparation
  • Provide advice and hands-on support to student field trips and field camps working in the natural environment ranging from, on campus to Robe, Kangaroo Island, Flinders Ranges, etc including logistical advice/support, risks assessments, access permits, animal ethics applications, etc.
  • Induct and sign off staff, students, and visitors in the safe and competent use of specialist teaching and research equipment
  • Coordinate laboratory and field equipment upgrades, maintenance, and repair/service requests
  • Ensure laboratory and workshop WHS procedures and processes are adhered to and work environments maintained to meet UniSA STEM and legislative requirements

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor in Environmental Science, Geology or Soil Science, and/or relevant hands-on industry experience in a research and/or testing facility/laboratory with field-based work
  • Experience evaluating technical requirements and designing analytical procedures and techniques to solve industry-related problems
  • Well-developed knowledge and experience of WHS regulations in a laboratory, workshop, and field environment
  • Ability to provide high quality, responsive customer service, to address clients’ needs
  • Experience working in a dynamic environment, liaising with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate operating instructions and/or scientific results
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a diverse technical/research team
  • Computer literacy with standard software packages, e.g. Microsoft Office, CAD, GIS, etc.
  • Previous experience in fieldwork in remote locations, with animal ethics/applications, Bus license/4WD experience, and Senior First Aid is highly desirable
