The Stanford Libraries’ Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections are at the forefront in providing innovative support for scholarship, teaching, and learning in the various subdisciplines in earth, energy, sustainability, and environmental sciences as practiced at Stanford.  Stanford University is committed to a sustainable future and as such is expanding the reach of the School to incorporate sustainability as one of its central pillars of excellence. This multi-year effort will fundamentally change and expand the reach of the School and with it the role of the library.  The library is well-positioned to support this major initiative with world-class collections, dedicated staff, and innovative technological solutions.  The Head Librarian will be involved in the redesign of the library in a myriad of ways to meet the needs of the expanded School.

The Head Librarian of the Earth Sciences Library provides a full range of high-quality library services for the faculty and students in the School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences (SE3) and to other interested faculty, students, and staff of the University. The Head Librarian is also a member of the Science and Engineering Resource Group in the Stanford Libraries.  In addition to subject expertise in a relevant discipline, the Head Librarian must have proven managerial ability and be capable of contributing to the programs and projects of the Libraries in general as well as to the University.

Core Duties:

  • Plans, develops, and manages programs and their collections within the framework of the University Libraries' policies and the needs of Stanford faculty and students.
  • Manages and evaluates the staff of the Earth Sciences Library.
  • Oversees and manages the facility and budget of the Earth Sciences Library.
  • Selects earth, energy, sustainability, and environmental science materials (EESE) in coordination other librarians covering adjacent disciplines within Stanford Libraries to assure collections coverage of interdisciplinary area that lie outside conventional subject boundaries.
  • Maintains close contact with members of the faculty to anticipate their research and instructional needs in order to provide relevant library resources and programs.
  • Works with Stanford Libraries staff to provide collections of digital materials as relevant to the research and teaching at the university.
  • Convenes and leads the School of Earth Library Committee and works with staff at the School to align library goals for the immediate term and as the plans develop for the new School of Sustainability.
  • Oversees and contributes to reference, research assistance, and bibliographic instruction in EESE and participates in the Stanford Libraries programs of bibliographic instruction. Creates and actively manages the library web space and oversees the social media outreach.
  • Provides instruction on library resources, reference, research assistance, and potentially software support to undergraduate and graduate majors as needed.
  • Represents the Earth Sciences Library in the Sciences and Engineering Resources Group and contributes to that group's planning, policy, and process.  Serves on Library committees and manages library projects as appropriate or assigned.
  • Participates as appropriate in the development activities of the Libraries, working closely with the Library Development Officer and the Associate University Librarian for Sciences and Engineering Resources. Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to School of Earth collections.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in earth, energy, sustainability and environmental resources librarianship through active participation in appropriate professional organizations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent in training and experience are desirable. Educational background in the field of earth, energy, environmental sciences, or sustainability strongly desired; an advanced degree in a relevant field is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Substantial knowledge of and/or experience in academic or research libraries and university research environments are required.
  • Strong subject competence in EESE and understanding of collection development in academic or research libraries.
  • Demonstrated professional accomplishments relevant to the responsibilities of this position are required. These may include scholarly publications, teaching experience, and library-related publications and presentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and management skills. Salary and appointment level commensurate with years of experience leading an organization (e.g. library, department, etc.).
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with library staff as well as with faculty and students is required.  Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse workplace environment is also required.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally, in writing, and through online platforms, is required.

For consideration at the Librarian 2 level:

  • Degree in earth, energy, environmental sciences/engineering or relevant subject discipline or an advanced degree in Library Science with demonstrated understanding the relevant subject matter and the workings of academic libraries.
  • Three or more years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.

For consideration at the Librarian 3 level:

  • Degree in earth, energy, environmental sciences/engineering or relevant subject discipline or an advanced degree in Library Science with demonstrated understanding the relevant subject matter and the workings of academic libraries.
  • Five years or more of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evening, and weekends.
