About the Faculty of Arts - School of Social and Political Sciences

The School of Social and Political Sciences is at the forefront of teaching and research in the social sciences in Australia. The School has a team of dedicated academic and professional staff in the disciplines of Political Science, Criminology, Anthropology, Development Studies and Sociology as well as allied research centres providing a dynamic and rewarding environment for staff and students. 

About the role

This position is offered as an ‘Melbourne Early Career Academic Fellowship’ (MECAF) and in this position staff will be expected to engage in a self-directed development programme which will be developed with the support of the staff’s supervisor and will include appropriate training, career and professional development opportunities and academic supervision. Eligibility for a MECAF position (as stated in section 2.17 of the Enterprise Agreement 2018) includes: Regular sessional teaching experience at a Level A or B; Less than three years post-PhD experience (which may be extended due to career interruption); and not previously held a continuing academic position with a tertiary education institution.

The Lecturer in Criminology will be a committed, engaging teacher and researcher with specific expertise in one or more of the following areas: border criminology, digital criminology, green or queer criminology, critical criminology, corporate crime, cultural criminology, criminological theories and methodologies, law and society, Indigenous criminology or whose work complements the existing Criminology profile at the University of Melbourne. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will assist in the development of new subjects as appropriate; supervision of RHD students and Honours/Masters by Coursework theses is also a requirement. The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research reputation of the Criminology discipline in the School specifically and of the Faculty of Arts more generally and will also undertake research resulting in publications with leading publishers in the field. The successful candidate will foster engagement links with external networks / partners nationally and internationally and will be expected to take on administrative tasks associated with the appointment and to perform these responsibly. The Lecturer in Criminology will be provided with early career development through the School’s ECR Mentoring Program. This will include a series of research workshops, training and mentoring.

About you

To be considered for this role, you will have a strong record in research with a developing publication profile in high profile criminology journals, a capacity to attract research grants, and demonstrated experience in community engagement. You will also have capacity to teach high enrolment undergraduate subjects, a demonstrated excellence in teaching with the ability to teach across a broad range of criminology subjects, and the ability to supervise honours and postgraduate coursework degree theses.
