COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST, MIT Energy Initiative-Communications and Events Team, to initiate and manage diverse and complex editorial, digital media, and media relations projects with minimal supervision in a highly collaborative environment. Responsibilities include writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of reports (including energy technology reports geared toward policymakers and industry), papers by MITEI researchers, and digital newsletters; managing social media channels and mentoring co-ops learning social media; collaborating on developing and implementing media relations strategies; providing event photography services; serving as an assistant editor of MITEI’s twice-annual Energy Futures magazine, including developing sections of the magazine, writing articles, and providing overall support; and working on donor management.
REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree; at least three years’ experience in a communications or related position; excellent writing, editing, media relations, digital media, organizational, and time-management skills; ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects on deadline; portfolio of published articles/online content demonstrating proficiency in a variety of writing styles; excellent judgment and discretion with sensitive materials; proficiency with MS Word, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and experience working with senior-level officials/faculty, especially in cases requiring tactfully “managing up” to keep projects on deadline. Seek detail-oriented, deadline-driven writer and editor who is highly conversant with traditional and digital media across multiple platforms and interested in developing and implementing new ideas that build on best practices.
PREFERRED: proficiency with Excel, project management systems (e.g., Asana or Trello), and website content management systems (e.g., WordPress or Drupal); basic graphic design skills; background in event and portrait photography; communications and/or marketing work experience in energy/climate/environmental organizations, industry member-supported organizations, and/or higher education.
