Job Details

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in ocean/ice modelling, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 programme.  The post will contribute to two EU projects: PROTECT (2 yrs of funding) and TiPACCs (Tipping Points in Antarctic Climate Components, 1 yr of funding).  The successful candidate will be part of the multi-disciplinary research theme ‘Extreme Environments’ and will be based in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences, within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK.

The work will focus on improving the representation of ocean circulation beneath ice shelves in large-scale, primitive equation ocean models.  A particular focus will be developing a physically-based algorithm for downscaling of relatively coarse-resolution ocean model output to provide the high resolution forcing fields required by ice sheet models.  The aim will be to improve the performance of the ice-sheet-ocean coupled models to be used within both the PROTECT and TiPACCs projects and beyond.  The work will involve an investigation of how sub-grid-scale processes within the ice-ocean boundary layer can be best represented in coarse-resolution models and the use of simpler models focussed on the boundary layer to guide the development of appropriate parameterisations.  The new algorithms will be evaluated using realistic models of selected regions around the Antarctic Ice Sheet.  There is scope for theoretical developments in mixing processes within the stable ice-ocean boundary layer as well as the opportunity to apply that understanding in improving ice-ocean coupled modelling.

The projects form part of larger collaborations involving partner institutes from across the UK and Europe that are coordinated in Grenoble, France (PROTECT), and Bergen, Norway (TiPACCs).  The candidate will primarily work with Adrian Jenkins, Hilmar Gudmundsson and Chris Bull at Northumbria University.  They will be a part of a sizeable group at Northumbria University focusing on various numerical and theoretical aspects of ice-ocean interactions, ocean circulation and ice mechanics.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in either physics or mathematics, or in a related, numerate discipline such as glaciology or geophysics. Experience in numerical modelling and background in or knowledge of applied mathematics is desirable.  The post will commence in early to mid-2021, with the targeted staring date being 1st May, 2021.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Professor Adrian Jenkins via Catherine Smurthwaite, on Catherine.smurthwaite@northumbria.ac.uk
