About the position

We have a vacancy for a Ph.D. Research Fellow in the Astroparticle Physics Group of the Physics Department at NTNU. The successful candidate will perform research in Multimessenger Astrophysics. The preferred starting date is September 01, 2021.

You will report to Ass. Prof. Foteini Oikonomou.

Duties of the position

The Ph.D. Research Fellow will focus on modelling the production and propagation of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, high-energy neutrinos, and the non-thermal electromagnetic emission from astrophysical sources. These calculations are aimed at improving our understanding of the extreme Universe and interpreting the data collected with e.g. the Pierre Auger Observatory, IceCube, and gamma-ray telescopes. Work on code development, and dissemination of the research orally and in writing are expected.  

Required selection criteria

• The Ph.D.-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Physics or closely related subject at the latest by the time you commence on the Ph.D. programme or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a Ph.D degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as Ph.D., post doctor and research assistant.

Preferred selection criteria

• We are particularly interested in candidates with prior experience in astroparticle physics and a background in scientific computing.

Salary and conditions

Ph.D. candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years but can be extended to 4 years subject to teaching duties at the Physics Department.

Appointment to a Ph.D. position requires that you are admitted to the  Ph.D. programme in Physics (PhD programme in Physics - NTNU) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized Ph.D. programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
