Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in topology, with a particular emphasis on manifolds. This position is funded by a 2 year EPSRC New Horizons grant entitled "Symmetries of 4-manifolds." Its specific aims are to investigate spaces of homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of manifolds, especially in dimension 4, and well as related questions about embedded surfaces. Applicants with an interest in learning about and working on these and related areas are strongly encouraged. However applicants with a broad range of expertise will be carefully considered (i.e. do not rule yourself out based on this paragraph).

Responsibilities

  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator. In particular, to work on developing new methods to understand symmetries of manifolds, individually or in collaboration with the existing members of the geometric topology group.
  • To publish high quality papers in peer reviewed journals.
  • To regularly attend seminars, collaborative meetings, and generally contribute to the research atmosphere of the group.
  • To prepare and deliver presentations on research output.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives by offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues, make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and form relationships for future collaboration.
  • To be involved in graduate student supervision, as appropriate, in particular through research group seminars and discussions.
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline, such as peer reviewing for journals.

This post is fixed term for 2 years The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st September 2021, although the precise start date can be discussed.
