We are looking for an enthusiastic person to take lead and execution of the delivery of the legacy and translation activities for a national Centre for Doctoral Training on Soil Science.   You will have experience of the research environment, and promoting science communication, to coordinate activities leading to a lasting legacy from the UKRI Soils Training And Research Studentships (STARS) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) http://www.starsoil.org.uk/

STARS has a mission to create a novel and unique national training experience for the next generation of soil scientists, the STARS  CDT, funded by NERC and BBSRC, is a consortium of 8 organizations from around the country:

  • Lancaster University
  • Bangor University
  • Cranfield University
  • University of Nottingham
  • UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology
  • British Geological Survey
  • The James Hutton Institute
  • Rothamsted Research

The STARS CDT has funded 40 PhD students in 3 cohorts, with most of the remaining students expected to complete their PhDs within the next 12 months. During the course of training these students we have amassed an extensive range of training resources and knowledge. Our ambition is to maximize their use and leave behind a lasting legacy for all users of soil science whether in education, research, industry or policy-making.

The role holder will be responsible for effective use of funds awarded by NERC under the NERC CDT Flexible Translation Award. This will include

  • Setting up and running the STARS Legacy web portal
  • Running the STARS legacy steering group
  • Organising conferences and symposia
  • Putting on workshops/courses
  • Contributing to published output
  • Further investigation of international soil training opportunities

The STARS CDT management is based at Lancaster Environment Centre which is the preferred site for the fellow, although it may be possible to be based with another STARS consortium member.  Responsible to the STARS Director, you will work largely independently coordinating and curating material already gathered, largely guided by the priorities set out in the Flexible Translation Award Proposal. It should be noted that there is still lots of scope for developing further legacy ideas and materials, although everything needs to be completed and executed in the time available.
It is possible that there will be some travel required to visit students, institutions, field locations and stakeholders around the country.

You will be responsible for budget monitoring.

You will be self-motivated, have a strong interest in science communication along with excellent project management skills and the ability to deliver to targets and deadlines.

You will join us on an indefinite contract, however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is due to come to an end on 31 March 2022.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.

Further details:

If you wish to discuss the role further please contact Olivia Lawrenson, STARS administrator, or Professor Phil Haygarth, STARS Director.
