The Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) is a Commonwealth funded CRC led from the Universities of Queensland and Western Australia. The CRC launched its year 1 Foundational Research Projects on Thursday 10 December 2020.  Alex Gardner, Professor of Law at the UWA Law School, is leading Project 1.3: Mapping the regulation of mine closure, relinquishment and repurposing across all Australian jurisdictions.

About the opportunity

As the successful appointee you will, under the supervision of the project leader, research and draft the project report. The project will map the Australian regulatory framework for mine rehabilitation and review the experience in applying that framework to site rehabilitation and repurposing, closure of operations, and tenure relinquishment in the transition to post-mining land uses that benefit regional development.

You will, at times, collaborate with the co-researcher on Project 1.3, Dr Yvonne Haigh at Murdoch University.

You will also work, as directed, on Project 1.1 “Towards a framework for environmental, economic and social cumulative regional impact assessments” led by Dr Renee Young, at the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Relevant academic legal qualifications (Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor and / or Master of Laws).
  • Expertise in Australian natural resources and environmental law, including knowledge of Australian mining law.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Personal commitment to scholarly research.
  • Highly developed and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly developed organisational skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and work productively as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Mining industry regulatory experience
  • An interest in environmental sustainability and regional economic development
