Durham University is a globally outstanding centre of teaching and research excellence, a collegiate community of extraordinary people working within a unique and historic setting. The Department of Sociology is a supportive and exciting place to work and for students to join our community studying Sociology, Criminology and Social Work. We are committed to producing the highest quality theoretically informed research that makes a difference. (Currently ranked 2nd for Criminology in the Times Good University Guide and 8th in the Guardian 2021 Universities League Table) our ambitions are: to be a world leading Department of Sociology; to deliver distinctive, challenging programmes; and to be fair, inclusive and socially responsible.

Over the last five years we have increased our research capacity in our four existing research themes:

  • Communities and Social Justice
  • Health and Social Theory
  • Higher Education and Social Inequality
  • Violence and Abuse

We now welcome applications for the post of Professor of Social Work to join our professional staff team and contribute to the wider teaching and research environment of the Sociology Department. We welcome applications from Sociologists, broadly conceived. Research expertise should ideally intersect with at least one of our existing first three research themes or our emerging areas of interest in the fields of: criminal justice, social harm and inequalities, and critical criminological approaches to prisons or youth justice. Experience in the application of participatory action research methods in any of these areas would also be welcomed.

We particularly welcome candidates from Black, Asian and other Minority Ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in our Department.

Competitive salary based on our professorial Pay Scales (starting at £64,606 and going considerably higher based on experience)
