About the position

We have a vacancy for an Associate Professor (førstelektor) in Web Technology at the Department of computer science.

We are looking for a candidate with a practical hands-on Web Technology expertise. The candidate is expected to play a major role in the teaching and supervision at the department of computer science. The candidate will play a role in developing the educational profile in the computer science programs and ensuring an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders.

The position is primarily for teaching, but we also expect that the candidate will conduct educational research or development work. The candidate is expected to follow the career path towards docent. In addition, the candidate is expected to be able to disseminate relevant parts of her/his research or development work to a wider audience.

You will report to the Head of department. 

Duties of the position

  • The position will have responsibility for teaching courses in web technology as well as offering student guidance on several levels.
  • Conduct educational research or development work.
  • Participate to the activities by the department.
  • Contributing to the development of the department’s academic activities.

Required selection criteria

The position of Associate Professor (førstelektor) within web technology requires that you meet the criteria in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-5.

For candidates not qualified for the position as associate professor (førstelektor), the position can be converted to assistant professor with the possibility for a qualification stipend for a period up to 3 years.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, at the same level that is required for an position as Associate Professor (førstelektor), ref. Regulations § 1-4 (3). If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

  • Have strong networking and programming background.
  • Be interested in relationship between web technologies and cloud, mobile and games.
  • Be familiar with the contemporary web development frameworks and practices.
  • Be familiar with various front-end and back-end programming languages.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and noSQL databases.
  • Good oral and written communication abilities in English.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for foreigners at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Good oral and written communication abilities in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.
  • Familiarity of WebAssembly.
  • Have interest in web technologies and formal specifications.
  • Have interest in decentralised technologies.
  • Relevant experience from the industry sector.
  • Experience from project-based learning.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (førstelektor) (code 1198) is normally from NOK 560 000 - NOK 760 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertake supervision. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
