This Lecturer in Clinical Practice position will support both the clinical placement learning experience of students in the final year of the NT Medical Program (NTMP) and work with the Flinders Regional Training Hub in the Northern Territory to provide a smooth transition from student to intern, and map and further develop medical specialist training capacity and training pathways. This will be an important role for the University’s achievement of its strategic plan Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

This position will enhance collaboration with local and national stakeholders, to specifically address medical workforce pipeline needs in the NT. For the final year NTMP component, the incumbent will work with clinical administrative staff regarding clinical placement learning opportunities within the health services of the Northern Territory (NT), oversee the development of these placements and provide supervision support. The role will integrate the clinical learning experience with the NTMP curriculum and assessments and will draw on contemporary clinical/professional practice to ensure optimal preparation for the transition into the NT medical workforce. The incumbent will support and mentor clinical supervisors across student and junior doctor years and work with the Hubs team and clinical divisions to identify potential training posts across all disciplines to enhance accredited supervision and training capacity. This role will also provide mentoring and individual support to students, junior doctors, and trainee registrars.

Key Position Responsibilities

This position has two main responsibilities across the continuum of medical workforce training:

Northern Territory Medical Program:

The incumbent is responsible for teaching and teaching-related duties involving the creation, delivery, and continuous quality improvement of university-level education. It includes but is not limited to: direct teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience; curriculum design and review; delivery innovation; advancements in education technologies; and making an independent contribution to maintaining internal and external compliance and accreditation of courses. Appointees bring recent, ongoing (concurrent) or extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary clinical/professional practice to the position.

Northern Territory Regional Training Hub

The incumbent is responsible for contributing to the successful delivery of the Regional Training program by facilitating the development of new post-graduate medical training capacity through activities including, but not limited to: workforce environmental scanning, identification of new training pathways, assisting health services in accreditation processes for new posts, and supporting local health professionals to become supervisors. Appointees will develop strong networks and build relationships within health services and relevant stakeholders to enhance career pathway planning and mentoring for NTMP students, junior doctors, and trainee registrars.

The position is also expected to make an independent contribution to high-quality university, professional and community service.

Teaching:

  • Create, coordinate, and conduct inspiring teaching informed by approaches that enhance the student experience, across all levels and modes, of the College with a focus on clinical skills training and/or supervision of students undertaking work integrated learning
  • Contribute to the planning and evaluation of the clinical placement-based topics, undertaking the role of Topic Coordinator as required
  • Make an independent contribution to the review, renewal, development, and design of curricula that are attractive to existing and new cohorts of students and that nurture creativity and critical-thinking skills
  • Provide support, academic counselling and professional advice to students concerning their studies, professional development, and career opportunities
  • Make effective use of innovations and technologies in teaching practice
  • Collaborate with academic remote NT site Directors across the NT and South Australia to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment of clinical skills for all students of the NTMP
  • Collaborating with the NTMP, FNT RTH and health services within the NT to support pre-internship transition preparedness

University, Professional and Community Service:

  • Undertaking activities that promote the development of productive partnerships to provide opportunities for to advance graduate employability
  • Providing academic leadership and acute care clinical expertise to the FNT RTH
  • Assisting health services in accreditation processes for new posts to increase training capacity
  • Identifying and supporting local health professionals to become supervisors
  • Working with relevant staff to evaluate the impact of the FNT RTH on workforce preparation and distribution
  • Development of strong networks and working relationships with health services within the NT, specialist colleges, the University and other stakeholders to maximise the opportunity for shared learning and efficiency of the use of resources to develop career pathways for medical graduates in the Northern Territory
  • Undertaking NT health workforce environmental scanning activities and reporting on the training placements available at each level of the medical training continuum within the FNT RTH’s region of activity
  • Representing Flinders NT on relevant local, College and/or University committees and participate in the wider academic activities of Flinders NT. Maintain professional knowledge relevant to teaching within their discipline through scholarship and professional development
  • Engaging in activities within a relevant external professional domain such as professional associations, conferences, and workshops, and within a wider community context at local, national, or international level
  • Providing high quality contribution to community service, with a focus on opportunities that maintain clinical skills currency, education, and the health and wellbeing of NT regional, rural, and remote communities on behalf of the College and University
  • Travel, both regionally within the Northern Territory and interstate is required for this position and may include travel in light aircraft and to remote areas. A driver's licence is required for this position.
  • There Is a need for flexibility on occasion in working hours, which may include working after hours and at weekends
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University

Key Position Capabilities

Essential

  • A medical degree and current registration as a medical practitioner with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or eligibility for the same
  • Completion of a PhD or Doctorate or EdD or equivalent qualification such as any one of the following:
  • Evidence of professional standing, reputation and qualifications demonstrated to be of an equivalent standard in the discipline area
  • Completion of a higher degree at Master’s level or substantial progress towards a doctoral degree in the discipline area
  • Fellowship of a specialty medical college and working or eligible to work as a hospital specialist
  • Experience in vocational and postgraduate training environments and the building of training capacity
  • Proven track record and expertise in clinical skills education
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a complex environment of multiple stakeholder relationships, with experience of successful interactions with government, health care organisations and with clinical and heath care professions
  • Demonstrated ability to practice and teach in a culturally safe manner, including the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their representatives
  • Demonstrated high-level oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, which includes the provision of quality supervision and feedback

Desirable

  • Demonstrated innovation in topic design and curriculum development
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within the NT and medical professional context
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hospital-based education training systems and protocols
  • Experience in Remote or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and promote high quality post-graduate medical education
  • A demonstrated commitment to social accountability in relation to health profession education
