About the position

The work will utilize observational evidence to quantify the impact of solar and energetic particle effects on neutral atmosphere chemistry and dynamics. The position will be part of the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS), a Research Council of Norway international collaborative Centre of Excellence. Hence the position, located at NTNU, will provide abundant opportunities for scientific cooperation with both the international and Norwegian space-science communities.

You will report to Patrick Espy, Head of Atmospheric and Environmental Physics group.

Duties of the position

• Utilize satellite data, as well as ground-based atmospheric radar, airglow, and radiometer data to quantify solar and energetic particle effects.
• Participate in the wider activities of the Birkeland Centre for Space Science (BCSS) Centre of Excellence
• Attend conferences, present work and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree in Atmospheric Science, Space Physics, Astrophysics or a related field, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Required selection criteria

• Strong data analysis, statistical, and programming skills demonstrated within the field of Atmospheric Science, Space Physics and/or Astrophysics
• Practical experience handling and interpreting large datasets and/or atmospheric models
• Verbal and written fluency in English

Preferred selection criteria

• Demonstrated ability to disseminate findings orally at professional meetings and workshops
• Previous authorship of high impact publications in the field of Space/Atmospheric Physics

Personal characteristics

• The successful applicant should be highly competent, motivated and ambitious.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written are important

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 2 years.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 545 300 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
