Overview

The Senior Legal Strategist will chart the direction for the Electoral Innovation Lab's involvement in redistricting and election policy nationwide. As redistricting is a state-by-state process, the strategist will build relationships with reform organizations within individual states, and craft a legal/policy strategy for each state to promote the drawing of fair maps, focusing on EIL’s priority states, and then work with local actors to implement the strategy. The Senior Legal Strategist will work with other members of the EIL team in assisting reform initiatives on other election related topics too, such as mail-in-voting, ranked choice voting, and primary election reform. The position will also contribute to the writing of legal scholarship. In doing all of this work, the Senior Legal Strategist will have support from, and provide supervision to, a Legal/Policy Analyst.

  • Work with local actors (such as advocacy organizations, redistricting commissions, and legal professionals) to implement selected strategies for addressing redistricting or other electoral reform efforts.
  • With support from the Legal/Policy Analyst, co-author legal scholarship and write amicus briefs in support of election law cases. Contribute to op-eds, blogs, and other journalistic pieces to support electoral reform initiatives.
  • Supervise Legal/Policy Analyst.
