The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a staff Research Physicist position to work on energetic particle diagnostics and on the physics of energetic particle (EP) driven instabilities, with focus on neutron detectors. Target devices include the JET tokamak at Culham (UK) and the NSTX-U Spherical Torus in Princeton, NJ.
The initial focus is to contribute to the interpretation of neutron diagnostics and to the development of synthetic diagnostics that can be used for the validation of EP physics models in time-dependent simulations for JET plasmas, including D-T scenarios. Focus will gradually shift after FY21 to the development, operation and analysis of fast ion diagnostics that are essential to the operations of NSTX-U, as well as to conduct experimental research on NSTX-U to develop improved understanding of energetic particle transport mechanisms in tokamaks.
The candidate will interact with physicists working on energetic particle physics at PPPL and collaborating institutions to contribute to the validation of models for fast ion driven instabilities and their effect on fast ion transport against data from fast ion and fluctuation diagnostics. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for the upgrade and operation of neutron detectors on NSTX-U during both the preparation for operations phase as well as during physics operation.
Education and Experience:
- Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in plasma physics. The position is at the RM3 level.
- At least 6 years experience as Research Scientist or equivalent
Knowledge and Skills:
- We are looking for a highly motivated, team oriented and experienced scientist with good knowledge of energetic particle physics, who will collaborate closely with both theorists and experimentalists.
- Applicants should have demonstrated skills in designing, operating, and interpreting data from fast ion diagnostics on tokamaks.
- Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in experimental plasma physics and knowledge in using & interpreting results from numerical codes, including first-principles codes for fast ion physics and more general tokamak transport codes such as TRANSP and synthetic diagnostic analysis tools.
