Job Details

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering

The REAMIT project will adapt and apply existing innovative digital technologies (Big Data and the Internet of Things) to food supply chains in NWE to reduce food waste. Through testing and adaptation, these technologies will be utilised to monitor and record food quality along the supply chain and signal potential food quality issues. Through analytics, owners of 'food to be at risk of becoming waste' will be supported with decision making tools (e.g. Apps) to make a choice on how to minimise food waste including redistribution to nearby consumers.

This is a unique opportunity for a recent PhD graduate in science or technology to join an international research team under the INTERREG North West Europe REAMIT project, addressing the application of IoT in food chain traceability, monitoring and control. Based in the UCD School of Biosystems & Food Engineering, the Post-doctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for the pilot-scale implementation and testing of a novel food traceability system, CyberBar, that provides traceability by directly imprinting smartphone-readable QR codes on to chicken fillets (this may also include other food chain traceability systems). The Fellow will work closely with a number of industry partners in commissioning and monitoring the performance of the system and will also interact closely with the international partners. CyberBar is designed to provide full chain traceability and assist in the reduction of food waste, particularly at retail and household stages along the chain. In addition, the successful candidate will carry out a technology assessment to study how users perceive the usefulness of REAMIT technologies to identify potential bottlenecks in the long-term adoption. To this end, screening and assessing of alternative food quality analysis sensors will be performed.

This is a research focused role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator. The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Salary: €38,631 - €39,186 per annum
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 29th January 2021

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
