The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies and Visual Culture. We invite applications from those with research and teaching interests Japanese Studies and Visual Culture broadly defined (including film studies, performance, and art history), that complement the research strengths of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. We particularly welcome applications from those whose research situates Japanese culture within a global perspective. We will also consider candidates with expertise in comparative literary or visual studies.

Japanese Studies in Durham is one of the top departments in the UK: it appears in the top five in major national league tables, contributing to Durham University’s top-20 placing for Arts and Humanities in the THE World Reputation Rankings 2020. 

There are currently two members of academic staff in Japanese Studies actively engaged in research and publication in the School, part of an overall complement of over fifty research active staff. Individual research expertise ranges from early modern studies to the contemporary and includes literature, visual arts and culture, theatre and performance studies, translation, history of science, technology, and medicine, history of the book, and media history.
