Position Focus:

The Embedded Mental Health Provider supports undergraduate students by providing psychotherapy and therapeutic interventions for students living in residential colleges. The provider will work in an office adjacent to the residential colleges to ease student access to mental health treatment. The provider will be available for same day appointments, and to provide intervention and support to students in need. They will work with students to arrange appropriate ongoing care or resources. The Residential College Deans or their designees may also connect them to students for consultation regarding matters in the college. As this role is to enhance student access to services through proximity, evening and weekend availability is expected.  The provider will need to work closely with residential college deans to form a collaborative relationship to support student mental health. The position reports to the Chief of Mental Health & Counseling. 

The Embedded Mental Health Provider may provide individual therapy and/or group therapy. They assess and diagnose mental illness. They provide culturally competent treatment to patients of varied racial/ ethnic identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and sexual/ gender identities. They administer and interpret psychological tests and develop and present written test results and analysis. Serve as liaison to patients, families, and clinical staff on issues and programs pertaining to psychological services. They serve as a liaison to Yale community and develop and deliver outreach programs to the Yale community. They adhere to psychology code of ethical conduct and abide by laws affecting the practice of psychology. 

Additional responsibilities include: Respond to acute or urgent need of students living in residential colleges. Plan and coordinate individual and group therapy. Participate in the development of short-term patient treatment, in collaboration with the Mental Health & Counseling department. Provide psychological services to patients of differing cultural backgrounds, identity configurations, and genders. Provide mental health emergency coverage. Interact with internal contacts such as patients, clinicians, social workers and other medical staff, administrators with regard to clinical programs and program development. Interact with external contacts such as outpatient therapists, residential treatment centers, and other mental health institutions. Respond to requests for support from the Residential College Deans.

Essential Duties

  1. Conduct patient evaluations and assesses patient progress or acceptability or psychotherapy programs.
  2. Consults with the MHC department for long term therapy or other support of student.
  3. Provides individual assessment, intervention, and group therapy to students living in residential colleges.
  4. Evaluates, assesses and modifies psychological treatment plans.
  5. Maintains patient charts and reports.
  6. Plans and coordinates the therapeutic activities of an individual or group.
  7. Oversees the development of individual and group psychotherapy plans.
  8. Establishes positive relations with patients in order to administer appropriate treatment.
  9. Develops materials for educational programs and group events for students.
  10. Serves as liaison to patients, families and clinical staff on issues and programs pertaining to psychological services.
  11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Social Work and two years’ experience post licensure providing clinical care; or  Ph.D in Clinical or Counseling Psychology; or Psy.D.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Two years of related work experience in a college setting strongly preferred.

Licensure as required in the State of Connecticut.
