Phd Research Fellow in Materials Science
About the position
A PhD research fellow position is available in the field of coating and surfaces to reduce fouling in marine applications. The PhD project is a collaboration between Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering and the Industrial Ecology Program, Dept. of Energy and Process Engineering.
Fouling may be a problem on surfaces caused by the operating environment, and the accumulation of unwanted material on the solid surface can destroy the functionality. In fish farming, there will be biofouling on all materials in contact with seawater. This include both steel constructions and the polymer cage wires. Today, the poly(ethylene) based cages are impregnated to reduce fouling, causing emissions of copper to the environment. The mechanisms for fouling and new coating materials for the impregnation process are of great interest to investigate further.
In this project, the main focus will be on investigating the surfaces which may be exposed to fouling in sea water. Materials, and especially the polymeric cages wires, will be characterized, relating mechanical properties to both structural and functional aspects. In particular, the impregnation process will be looked into to find novel material solutions with better anti-fouling properties from a sustainable point of view. An important goal of the project is to understand how to combine good anti-fouling performance with materials durability on an environmentally friendly material surface. The project includes life-cycle analysis.
Required selection criteria
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in in materials science, physics, chemistry or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.
Background and experience in coating, surface treatment and mechanical properties are desired. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently, and has good communication skills and is able to collaborate with other PhD candidates.
The candidate must have, or complete before the summer of 2021, a master’s degree in the field of materials science, physics or chemistry.
Excellent written and oral English language skills as well as presentation skills are required.

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 4 years. This includes one year with teaching duties.
Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in PhD programme in materials science within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
