Job Description Summary

Under limited supervision this position performs grounds care and maintenance operations at the New Bolton Center.  Working with part time employees ensuring the grounds are kept to an acceptable appearance.  Perform repair functions and preventative maintenance on all equipment utilized by the department.

Job Description

Under limited supervision the Gardener performs grounds care and maintenance of all New Bolton Center lands.  The individual will oversee three part time staff members that work during the spring and summer months to ensure that our grass is kept at acceptable levels. Assists the farm department in snow removal operations including the use of a plow or skid loader, monitors the trees on campus to ensure they are trimmed as needed and do not present any risk to people or buildings and maintains all of our lawn care equipment including the riding mowers, push mowers, string trimmers and chain saws.  This includes both annual maintenance as well as breakdowns which occur while utilizing the machines.  Special projects as assigned during the winter months.

Provide snow removal assistance to the farm crew during snow storms.


High School Diploma or GED is preferred and 2-3 years of experience in grounds, pasture, flower bed maintenance, snow removal as well as demonstrated ability to perform repair and mechanical tasks on landscaping equipment.  Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted and perform strenuous work outside during all seasons.  This position does require flexibility in hours as overtime may be required to maintain grounds during seasonal operations.  Must possess a valid driver’s license, free of any state or municipal suspension or revocation.  Position is located in Kennett Square/West Chester, PA.  No public transportation available.

Working Conditions: High noise environment; High dust, dirt, grease environment;

Requires extensive safety training; Alternative work schedules, On-Call (beeper); Exposure to moving machinery; Outdoor exposure to weather.

Physical Effort: Typically standing or walking; Frequent lifting 25 lbs. or more ; Using tools requiring high dexterity.
