The Department of Chemistry at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Professor, two posts are available, with research and teaching interests in the broad field of organic / bio-organic functional materials chemistry (including synthetic chemical biology or biological chemistry, catalysis, polymers) [Post 1] or experimental soft matter (including surfaces and interfaces) or polymer chemistry (including biopolymers and extended functional organic molecules) [Post 2]. We are particularly eager to hear from applicants with strengths in synthetic chemistry.

Our research is centred on three core themes, Manufacturing the Future, Bio-economy and New Materials, all of which are truly global challenges with the potential to generate significant economic and social impact.
To support these themes researchers with common interests and complementary skills are clustered together in Research Groupings. We currently have six research groupings: Functional Molecules & Materials; Physical Organic & Assembly; Computational & Dynamics; Soft Matter & Interfaces; Catalysis & Sustainable Chemical Processes; and Bioactive Chemistry & Synthesis. At postgraduate level our students come from all over the world to carryout research. Durham Chemistry (in conjunction with other departments in the Faculty of Science and in partnership with the Universities of Leeds and Edinburgh), is home to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Soft Matter and Interfaces, SOFI2 CDT. We are also a partnership with the University of Newcastle in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Molecular Sciences for Medicine.
