The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for two positions of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

both for a fixed term starting from March 1st 2021 to January 31st 2023 to contribute to the nationwide responsibility of the Centre for Consumer Society Research (CCSR). There is very little leverage in the starting date of the positions and none at the end.

The CCSR bears the nationwide responsibility for 1) conducting multidisciplinary research on significant phenomena in consumer studies and on their effects on the lives of consumers, 2) participating in the offering of university education in the field, and 3) participating in development projects, which enhance the societal impacts of the research field.

Research at the CCSR focuses on the development of the consumer society from the perspectives of societal structures and consumers. The research is problem-oriented, multi-disciplinary and future-oriented. The centre makes critical use of qualitative and quantitative methods and engages in the participatory development of innovations by means of research. It also studies the impact of economic phenomena and politics on consumers and the consumer society. We contribute to political debates on the future of Finnish consumer society. Please see further information on https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/centre-for-consumer-society-re....

The appointees are recruited to strengthen the fulfilment of the nationwide responsibility of the centre. Accordingly, an appointee is expected to contribute 2-5 months of annual work time to joint projects at the centre, develop her/his own and our common research agenda, and contribute to collective academic tasks such as teaching, seminars and joint academic papers. To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the applicant chosen is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki, and actively participate in the research and teaching activities of the Centre. The Faculty of Social Sciences provides assistance in relocation.

An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field of social science, the ability to conduct independent scientific research in a highly multidisciplinary environment and possess the teaching skills required for the position. Successful, highly motivated candidates will have substantial research experience as demonstrated by high-quality publications in the core research area; a strong theoretical and methodological background and interest in empirical research on contemporary manifestations of change in consumer society and concrete ideas about how the candidate’s work will contribute to research in the field. Proven teamwork skills and commitment to academic collaboration is considered an advantage. In addition, the candidates are expected to have good communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English. Since a significant part of the research conducted at the Centre for Consumer Society Research is funded through external projects, a track-record in previously obtained research funding is considered a merit.

The annual gross salary range will be approx. 41,000 – 50,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. In addition, occupational healthcare will be provided. The employment contract will include a probationary period of six months.

Applicants are requested to enclose with their applications the following documents as a single pdf file:

  1. A curriculum vitae
  2. A selection of five key publications to be considered during the review
  3. A research plan on how to contribute to the fulfilment of the nationwide responsibility of the centre.
